Matryoshka Nesting Dolls
Probably the most popular of all the Russian folk arts is the Matryoshka nesting doll. These dolls are traditionally made of linden wood or lime tree wood, which are naturally soft, so as to make them easily lathe turned. They are put into sets where each doll diminishes in size as the set grows in numbers. The most common numbers of dolls to come in a set are 3,5,7,9, and 12, however there are sets with as many as 70 dolls inside of each other. These sets also come in varied shapes and sizes. These hand painted wooden Matryoshka dolls are fast becoming collectors items in the United States.
